Art Education

  1. Have completed a major in an area of arts and sciences, such as studio art/art education with a minimum of 30 credits in studio art and 6 credits in art history with a cumulative index of no lower than 2.7 overall and 3.0 in the major;
  2. For Initial Certification students only:Transcript verification of 30 credits in Liberal
    Arts, distributed as follows:
    • Artistic Expression: coursework in such areas as art, dance, music or theater;
    • Humanities: coursework in such areas as literature, religion (but not theology), philosophy, or cultural anthropology;
    • For Initial Certification students only: communication: coursework in such areas as communication, English, written or literary analysis, or composition
    • Written Expression: coursework in English or composition
    • Information Retrieval: coursework in such areas as library studies, research, computer literacy, or educational technology;
    • Historical & Social Science Concepts: coursework in such areas as history, anthropology, economics, psychology, sociolology, or political science;
    • Language other than English (including American Sign Language) (6 credits);
    • Scientific Processes: coursework in such areas as biology, chemistry, astronomy, earth science, and physics;
    • Mathematical Processes: coursework in such areas as algebra, geometry, calculus, number theory, statistics, or probability.
  3. Submit official transcripts from all institutions attended;
  4. Submit completed application form, resume, and application fee;
  5. Submit two letters of recommendation from professionals who have direct knowledge of the applicant’s potential for completion of the program (for instance: former professors, school administrators, supervisors);
  6. Submit a 300-word essay stating background and professional goals, and articulating how this program will assist in attaining goals;
  7. Submit a portfolio of 10 pieces of artwork (slides or photographs may be mailed to the division office);
  8. Writing sample done onsite;
  9. Interview with the Advisor after all application materials have been received and reviewed;
  10. Complete and sign the Immunization Form;
  11. Sign the Statement of Academic Integrity;
  12. International students are required to submit a TOEFL score of no lower than 5.5.


Note: Students selecting the Professional Certification program must submit a copy of their Initial or Provisional Certification.


Admission to Candidacy

During the semester in which the 12th credit-hour (at least 6 credits in required courses) is completed, the student must apply for candidacy. Candidates must have a cumulative index of no lower than 3.0 (B) in each required course, and must be judged suitable for continuation in the program by the faculty and Assistant Dean of the Division. Students not accepted for candidacy may be asked to withdraw from the program. A student who does not apply for candidacy will not be considered a degree candidate.
