Graduation Requirements for M.A. in Art Education Leading to
Professional Certification
- 36 credits of graduate study as follows:

- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, with grades no lower than B (3.0) in each required course;
- Completion of degree requirements within five (5) years from the date of matriculation.
Facilities
Art Department facilities consist of specialized studios for drawing, painting, silk screen, graphic design, sculpture, photography, printmaking, ceramics, and computer graphics. Exhibit halls are located in the Mooney Center. Studios are available for students enrolled in courses using those studios, whenever classes are not in session and on non-holiday weekends. A model classroom is used to simulate the teaching environment.
General Course Requirements
Students complete most of their degree programs by taking courses during the Fall and Spring semesters. Elective and some required courses are also offered during Intersession, two Summer sessions and the August Graduate Institute. Students plan their programs accordingly with the assistance of his/her faulty advisor. Note that the degree cannot be completed by taking only summer coursework.
Student Teaching Orientation
Students choosing the Initial Certification program must attend Orientation to Student Teaching before identifying student teaching placements. Contact Program Advisor for time and place. Student teaching may be waived upon verification of one year of full time paid art teaching experience in a public or private school (for a Provisional Certificate) or 40 days of full-time, paid satisfactory experience (for an Initial Certificate). Students who qualify for the waiver must take 6 credits selected with advisement from Art Education elective courses.
Certification Exams
During the first year of the program, and prior to enrolling in AED 525 Student Teaching in Art Pre-K-12, students must provide evidence of having passed the LAST exam. They must pass the ATS-W and the Content Speciality Exam before completing the degree program.
