Admission to Candidacy

Degree-seeking students in the Career Development Program must apply for candidacy after successful completion of 12 graduate credits. Candidacy status will be granted to those students who have maintained a minimum cumulative index of B (3.0) and who have been judged suitable for the program by the faculty. Students not accepted to candidacy will be asked to withdraw from the program. A student who does not apply for candidacy will not be considered a degree candidate, or a candidate for graduation. At least two semesters are required as a degree candidate prior to application for graduation.

Evaluation Procedures

Following admission into the Career Development Program, students are evaluated at three different levels:

  1. Prior to acceptance as a degree candidate. After completing 12 credits in the program, a student must apply for degree candidacy;
  2. Prior to the internship experience. A student must apply for internship;
  3. Prior to graduation.

Evaluation at each level will be based on the following criteria:

  1. Academic performance:
    1. 3.0 cumulative average;
    2. no incomplete grades outstanding at each evaluation level.
  2. Professional performance:
    1. demonstrates suitable behavior in academic and professional settings;
    2. demonstrates appropriate interpersonal relationship skills;
    3. demonstrates personal maturity and ethical behavior.

If any of the above criteria are not met, a student may be:

  1. required to repeat a course;
  2. placed on probation;
  3. given a leave of absence;
  4. asked to withdraw.

The decision will be made by the faculty and the Assistant Dean.

Internships

Applications for internships must be made by November 1 for the Spring semester and April 1 for the Fall semester. Arrangements for the internship must be finalized prior to the registration for course CLD 710 or 711. A student must meet with the Assistant Dean or internship instructor to explore internship possibilities, to receive the internship manual, and to submit a résumé. The contract between the site supervisor and the student must be submitted and approved by the internship instructor and Assistant Dean prior to registration.
