Communication Studies


Once the student has been accepted into the program, a plan of study will be designed with the student’s advisor.


Non-Matriculated Status
Students may be admitted to the program with a non-matriculated status. The applicant must present the following:

  1. Completed application;
  2. Evidence of completion of a bachelor’s degree. This will be an official copy of the transcript;
  3. Payment of the $35 application fee;
  4. Signed Statement of Academic Integrity.

A maximum of 6 credits will be permitted for a non-matriculated student. To matriculate, the student must complete requirements for Matriculated Status. A student who wishes to continue in a non-matriculated status after earning 6 credits may do so only with the permission of the Assistant Dean.

Students who do not have a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) in their undergraduate
degree major must obtain permission from the division head to register for courses on a
non-matriculated basis.


The School of Arts & Sciences and The Graduate School Agreement

The Graduate Communication Studies Program has an articulation agreement with the School of Arts & Sciences, through which students earn both undergraduate and graduate degrees.

During the junior year, communication majors in the School of Arts and Sciences who have a 3.0 cumulative index and will complete between 21-36 credits in their major by the end of junior year may submit a letter of intent to enroll in the Master of Science in Communication Studies Program. The letter is sent to the Department Chair and the Assistant Dean of Graduate Art & Communication Studies.

Students must formally apply to the Graduate Communication Studies program by submitting the following:

  1. Completed application form;
  2. Official transcripts from all undergraduate schools previously attended;
  3. One letter of recommendation from the Communication Chairperson;
  4. Goals statement: a 300-word essay stating background and professional goals which articulates how this program will assist in attaining goals;
  5. Interview with the Assistant Dean is required when the application file is complete;
  6. Signed Statement of Academic Integrity.

Students will be notified of acceptance into the Graduate School by the Graduate School Communication Assistant Dean. Students who are accepted may take three to nine credits in graduate communication courses.
