The Education Center at the Graduate School of The College of New Rochelle,
located in Chidwick Hall, provides a variety of educational and therapeutic
programs for children and adults. The Education Center is staffed by students
who are master’s degree candidates in education, guidance and counseling, and
school psychology who work under the supervision of Graduate School faculty.
Programs are scheduled throughout the year and coincide with the College’s
semester schedule.
PROGRAMS OFFERED
The Can-Do Program
The educational assessment component of this program is designed to provide information
related to a child’s educational strengths and areas of academic need.
The Education Center offers this program to elementary age children. Each assessment
includes a complete educational test battery, administered by graduate students
who have chosen to specialize in special education, guidance and counseling or
school psychology. All testing is administered under the supervision of a faculty
member. Interviews, several ninety minute testing and tutoring sessions, a written
report and final conference are all included in this program.
Running concurrently with testing, each child will participate in direct tutorial
sessions to address his/her individual learning needs. Each child’s homework
will be used as a foundation for the introduction of learning strategies, with
the goal of addressing New York State Learning Standards. The ratio of teacher-to-child
is two-to-one.
This program is offered after school from October through June and at various
times in July.
The Tutoring Program
For children who have completed the Can-Do Program, there is an opportunity to
continue with one-to-one tutoring. Specific learning strategies will be addressed.
All tutoring is done under the supervision of a graduate school faculty member.
At the conclusion of the program, parents receive a written report describing
progress and recommendations for school and home. This program is offered after
school, October through June.
After-School Reading Program and the June-July Reading Program
The Reading Programs provide one-to-one evaluation and remediation of reading
and writing difficulties. Elementary age children are seen by graduate students,
who are licensed teachers, in the Literacy Education master’s degree program
under the supervision of a graduate school faculty member. The After School Reading
program runs from October through May. The June-July Reading Program is scheduled
in the late afternoons in June and mornings in July.
Confidentiality
The Education Center keeps records of participants’ attendance
and progress. These records are confidential and are not released to
any person or institution except upon written request from the participant’s
parent or guardian. If the participant is over 18, he or she may request
the records. Forms are available for this purpose.
Fees
The Education Center offers each of these services to the community at
a modest fee. Partial tuition subsidies are available.
