Documents submitted in support of application for admission become part of the
permanent records of the Graduate School and will not be returned to the applicant.
Permission to register as a non-matriculated student may be granted by the Assistant Dean to a qualified applicant who is not degree-seeking, but wishes course credit only. Admission as a non-matriculated student carries no commitment for later admission into a degree program. Courses taken by a non-matriculated student may be credited toward a master’s degree if approved and authorized by the Assistant Dean. Nonmatriculated students should meet once a semester with the Assistant Dean to discuss their educational goals and objectives. Such a meeting is required of non-matriculated students who have accumulated 9 credits before they may be approved for additional course work.
Student’s requiring only a Supervised Internship to qualify for New York State Certification may apply for special consideration. The above listed application requirements must be submitted. Qualified applicants who are accepted must complete 12 credits of appropriate coursework with at least a grade of B prior to the internship.
Admission to Candidacy
Degree-seeking students in the Guidance and Counseling Program must apply for
admission to candidacy at the end of the semester in which they complete their 12th
credit toward the degree. Candidacy Application Forms are available in the Division
of Human Services office. Candidacy status will be granted to those students who
have maintained a minimum cumulative grade point index of 3.0 (B) and who have
been judged suitable for further progress toward the degree. Students not admitted to
candidacy will be asked to withdraw from the degree program. A student who does
not apply for candidacy will not be considered a degree candidate, or a candidate for
graduation.
Progress Toward the Degree
Following admission into the Guidance and Counseling Program, there are three benchmarks for evaluation of progress toward the degree:
- Prior to acceptance as a degree candidate, a student who has completed 12 credits must apply for candidacy. The student must have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (B) and be judged suitable for further progress toward the degree by the faculty.
- Prior to the internship experience, a student must apply for the internship experience, must have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (B), and be judged suitable for further progress toward the degree by the faculty.
- Prior to graduation, a student must complete an Application for Degree form, must have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (B), and must have completed all requirements for the degree.
