Provisional Certification in Guidance and Counseling
According to the New York State Education Department, a student may apply for Provisional Certification as a School Counselor after completing 30 graduate credits in school counseling (from the courses listed above) which must include:

In addition, the student must attend the Child Abuse Identification and School Violence Prevention Workshops, and must obtain Fingerprint Clearance.
Permanent Certification in Guidance and Counseling
According to the New York State Education Department, a student may apply for Permanent Certification with the following requirements:
- Satisfaction of requirements for Provisional Certification
- Master’s Degree
- Completion of a total of 60 graduate credits in school counseling
- Two years of experience in pupil personnel service-school counseling
Advanced Certificate in Guidance & Counseling – 15 Credits
In order to help a student achieve the educational requirements for Permanent Certification, the College of New Rochelle offers a 15 credit Advanced Certificate in Guidance & Counseling. Students with a Master’s Degree in Guidance & Counseling may choose these 15 credits from any of the elective courses in the Guidance and Counseling program. These courses are to be chosen in conjunction with a faculty advisor.
