America Reads/America Counts

The America Reads/America Counts offers colleges and universities participating in the Federal Work-Study Program the opportunity to help improve the reading and math performance of preschool and elementary school students by having college students tutor these children. The program has expanded to include a Family Literacy Program. The College of New Rochelle participates with over 900 colleges and universities in America Reads/America Counts, one of the key elements in former President Clinton’s “Call to Action for American Education.”

 
Requirements

To become a tutor in the program, students must:

  • Be a Federal Work-Study Student
  • Enjoy tutoring children
  • Exercise responsibility
  • Be consistent in attendance
  • Attend all orientation and training sessions

Tutoring Locations
All locations are within walking distance of the College

  • Adult Learning Center
  • Jefferson Elementary School
  • New Rochelle Library (children’s section)
  • Trinity Elementary School

The America Reads/America Counts provides a rewarding experience for both the CNR students who participate and the children you tutor.
