I work closely with Dr. Beauzethier on my French, including all the necessary medical terminology I’ll need, and my advisor Dr. Harasym, who continues to encourage me and give me guidance to help me meet my goals.

Angelique Avin SAS’14 always knew she wanted to help people, but her mind was made up after a trip with her father to Sri Lanka in 2004, immediately after the tsunami. Angelique is fluent in French, which she learned from her Haitian father. She watched the multi-lingual doctors, from Doctors Without Borders, help all of the injured people and knew that would be her career path.

“I chose CNR because it was a small school. I could focus on my studies and receive personal attention from the professors,” Angelique said. “I work closely with Dr. Beauzethier on my French, including all the necessary medical terminology I’ll need, and my advisor Dr. Harasym, who continues to encourage me and give me guidance to help me meet my goals.”

She doesn’t limit herself to her academic pursuits; she was voted Student Government Association President for 2012-2013, she has been a member of the Blue Angels basketball and softball team since her freshman year, and serves on multiple student life committees.

“Helping people doesn’t limit me to the medical field,” she said. “I’m involved with student life because I care about people. I’d describe myself as very idealistic. When I meet someone, I want to get to know them. I talk to everybody on campus.”

Angelique’s ultimate career goal is to become a pediatric neurosurgeon in a francophone country.
