CROSS-CURRICULAR
APPROACHES TO WELLNESS
|
The Wellness
Center
will integrate the College’s Nursing, Physical Education, Health
Education/Health Services and Athletic programs in creating educational
programs for wellness. Placing these areas in one location will allow
for the
interdepartmental collaboration needed to develop and implement the
health and
wellness education programs we envision. This innovative
cross-curricular
approach to health, well-being, and learning—the first of its kind—will
serve
as a model for other colleges and universities across America.
Program
modules will develop from teaching activities in the School
of Arts
and Sciences and in the School
of Nursing.
Students have already conducted community health care assessments
(collecting
data and surveys), in conjunction with the College’s Health Services,
in
communities surrounding the city campuses and responded with programs
on
asthma, diabetes, child safety, nutrition and obesity, stress
reduction,
maternal/child health, and drug education. The School
of Nursing will also create
education exhibits, presentations, and materials to share with school
districts
and various community groups in Westchester and
other
urban and traditionally underserved populations.
