Maura Lawn” Held by CNR Community

September 28, 2005, The College of
New Rochelle hosted Sleep Out 2005. Members of the College Community
made temporary “homes for the night”
out of cardboard boxes, thereby experiencing for one night what the

Announces 2005 Serviam Award Honorees
In recognition of their
outstanding volunteer work, five students of
CNR were honored on October 20 during CNR’s Founders Day celebration.

“Stop the Raid on Student Aid”
Freshman student Jee Hee Yoon sends a quick email to her congressional
representatives urging them to “Stop the Raid on Student Aid.”
Organized by Terri Eberle Boyle, Director of Government Relations at
CNR, laptops were set up in the Student
Campus Center
so students could go on-line and email their representatives about the
proposed cuts to student aid.
Now is a critical time for us
to let Congress know how we feel about higher education regulations and
funding.

Three
members of the School of Arts and Sciences’ Honors Program attended the
2005 National Collegiate Honors Council’s annual conference in St.
Louis, Missouri over the weekend of October 27 – 30. Above: Sara

’08; Kathryn Tyranski SAS ’06, and Elizabeth Skrip SAS ’06 attended the
conference with Honor School Director, Dr. Amy Dr. Bass. “It was
a
wonderful and exhausting experience for us all,” said Dr. Bass. “The
student spent four days exploring St. Louis, attending a series of
cultural events, participating in academic forums and panels, and
presenting their own research to faculty and students from around the
country. One special event was taking the tram capsule to the top of
the famous St. Louis Arch. The students were the only ones allowed
inside the capsule on this, the 40th anniversary of the Arch.

has been
awarded a Greater Research Opportunities
Student Fellowship from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Dr. James T. Schleifer, Dean
of Gill Library, participated in
several important scholarly gatherings during 2005, the 200th
anniversary of the birth of Alexis de Tocqueville. In May he attended a
conference of French and American Tocqueville specialists in France
(Paris and Normandy) and gave a presentation on Tocqueville’s ideas on
liberty. In June he was invited as a Visiting Fellow of the Japan
Society for the Promotion of Science to lecture on Tocqueville in
Japan; he attended a major international conference at the University
of Tokyo where he gave a paper on the contemporary American
interpretations of Tocqueville’s Democracy in America; during June he
also lectured at other Japanese universities in Sapporo, Kyoto and
Tokyo. In September, at a third international conference at Yale
University, he gave another paper entitled “Tocqueville’s Journey
Revisited: What Was Striking and New In America.” Dr. Schleifer,
internationally recognized as a Tocqueville scholar, also wrote a
chapter for a forthcoming book, The
Cambridge Tocqueville Companion, to
be published in Spring 2006 by Cambridge University Press.
Dr. Anne D. Frost, Associate
Professor in the School of Nursing, has
developed a two-part DVD program for high school and college students
on the dangers and interventions of alcohol toxicity.
Dr. Kenneth J. Doka,
Professor of Gerontology in the Graduate School,
has been invited by the United States Department of Defense to
participate with delegates of eighteen other nations with whom the
United State has MIA/POW issues. Dr. Doka’s role will be to discuss the
importance of obtaining the remains of deceased loved ones for grieving
American families. The conference will take place this month in Hawaii.
Dr. Geraldine Valencia-Go,
Associate Professor in the School of
Nursing, published an article, “Growth and Access Increase for Nursing
Students: A Retention and Progression Project,” in the Spring 2005
issue of Journal of Cultural
Diversity. The article describes the
School of Nursing’s GAINS Project funded by the Department of Health
and Human Services. Dr. Valencia-Go served as Project Director.
Dr. Joan Arnold, Professor of
Nursing in the School of Nursing, is
currently the Vice President of Friends of Hospice, the Vice President
of Nurses Educational Funds, Inc. that supports graduate education in
nursing, and the Chair of the Research Committee for the Association of
SIDS and Infant Mortality Program Processionals. She is also co-editing
a book for Jossey-Bass publisher entitled Health Promotion in Practice
that will appear in March, 2006.
Cristina De Gennaro,
Associate Professor of Art in the School of Arts
& Sciences, participated in a Senior Artist Residency for
Mid-Career Artists at the Oregon College of Arts and Craft over the
summer, during which time she began her new installation artwork, Memory Drawings.
She also gave a public slide presentation on her work
and an open studio lecture as part of the residency program.
Dr. Faith Kostel-Hughes,
Assistant Professor of Biology in the School
of Arts & Sciences, published a paper on, “Effects of leaf litter
depth on the emergence and seedling growth of deciduous forest tree
species in relation to seed size,” in the Journal of the Torrey
Botanical Society.
