The College of New
Rochelle Celebrates
Commencement with
Hurricane Relief Fundraising Effort for Xavier University in New Orleans
After Hurricane Katrina,
Xavier’s campus was totally under water. Every building on the
campus was flooded and ravished by damaging winds.
As a central part of
its Commencement
celebration this year, CNR is launching a fundraising effort to assist
in
rebuilding efforts at Xavier University in New Orleans, which sustained
extensive damage from Hurricane Katrina. At its 99th Commencement
Exercises on May 25, 2006 at Radio City Music Hall, CNR will confer an
honorary degree on Dr. Norman C. Francis, Xavier’s president, who will
also give the Commencement Address. m o r e

Well?
A Discussion of the Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina

On Wednesday evening, April 26, 2006, members of the faculty of the
School of Arts
& Sciences presented "Will New Orleans Be
Well?" an interdisciplinary
discussion of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in support of The
College of New Rochelle's Wellness
Programming. The event examined the complexities of restoring
health to the communities affected by this disaster. m o r e

Strawberry Festival

With
the weather
cooperating for a day of fun-filled
outdoor activities for people of all ages, the 34th Annual Strawberry
Festival took place on Sunday, May 7, 2006 on Maura
Lawn on the College’s Main Campus in New Rochelle. It was an exciting
day for families, students, faculty, staff, and alumnae/i. Student performances were an added attraction
for
the
afternoon. Members of CNR Drama (above), The Gospel Choir, Black Ice
Step Team and Blue Angels
Cheerleaders wowed the audience with their outstanding talents and CNR
spirit.

Billings Speaks at
the 29th Annual Whitney M. Young, Jr. Memorial Symposium.

Reverend David Billings, a trainer and organizer with The
People’s Institute since 1983, was the Keynote speaker at the 29th
Annual Whitney M. Young, Jr. Memorial Symposium on Friday, April 21, 2006.
This event, sponsored by the Multi-Cultural Affairs Committee of the
Westchester Division of the NASW, was hosted by The College of New
Rochelle and Dr. Judith Gordon, Associate Professor of Social Work in
the School of Arts & Sciences.

Annual Honors Conference Day

The scholarly undertakings of students enrolled in CNR’s Honors Program
were featured at Honors Conference Day, Thursday, April 27,
2006.
Working with both peers and faculty mentors, students presented their
findings at the annual luncheon event.

First SAS Honors
Presidential
Lyceum Held on Campus

Honors students of the School of Arts & Sciences were the guests of
President Sweeny on Tuesday, April 18, 2006. The
students were invited to
participate in the inaugural meeting of the Honors Presidential Lyceum,
a dinner conversation with Dr. Sweeny to discuss the novel The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk
Kidd. Two members of each honors class were selected by Dr. Amy
Bass,
Director of the Honors Program at CNR, to participate. With President

Members
of College Community Quizzed on “Earth Knowledge Day”

On Thursday, April 20, 2006, the fourth annual
“Earth Day Game Show”
was hosted
by SAS Associate Professor of English Dr. Nick Smart (r.). Contestants
were quizzed (and won prizes!) for
their “earth
knowledge.” A full house of students, faculty, and staff filled Romita
Auditorium.

Speak at the 12th Annual Student Symposium of
the Westchester Consortium of International Studies

The College of New Rochelle hosted the Twelfth Annual Student Symposium
of the Westchester Consortium of International Studies on Monday, April
3, 2006
in Romita Auditorium on the main campus of CNR. Dr. Andre Beauzethier,
Associate Professor of Modern Languages in the School of Arts &
Sciences, and Dr. Anne McKernan, Associate Professor of History and
International Studies in the School of Arts & Sciences, were the
moderators of two panels that featured students from Manhattanville
College, Marymount College of Fordham University and The College of New
Rochelle.

co-authored A Parent’s Guide to
Special Education in New York City and the Metropolitan Area published by Teachers College

Professor of Gifted Education in the Graduate School.
Dr. Dennis Ryan,
Associate Professor of Religious Studies in the School of Arts &
Sciences, has published Dreams About
the Dead: Glimpses of Grief. The book, based on over 1000
interviews of people who had dreams about dead relatives and friends,
is published by University Press of America.
Dr.
Kenneth Doka, Professor of Gerontology in the Graduate School,
was on a panel of ethicists, educators and hospice experts who
participated in
the 13th Annual Hospice Foundation of America’s nationwide live
teleconference aired on April 5 at the College.
