“As
an undergradute at CNR, I was inspired by the college’s motto of
‘serviam’
(I will serve). After graduating, I joined the Peace Corps and
served
as a Volunteer in Ethiopia. My Peace Corps experience ignited my
life-long
passion for Africa and significantly influenced my career choices.
Since
leaving campus, I have worked in various positions to promote social
and
economic development in the developing countries of Africa.”

After graduating from CNR with a bachelor’s in
mathematics, Jasperdean Kobes
‘62 was one of the first CNR graduates to join the Peace Corps, serving
as
a volunteer in Ethiopia, where she developed the life-long passion for
Africa which
would influence her life.
After earning her M.I.A. and Ed.D. from Columbia University, she
went on to work for the Peace Corps
in Kenya and later with World Education, Inc., a non-governmental
organization
which implements adult education programs around the world, managed
programs
in Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Sudan.
Making the transition in the 1980’s to entrepreneur, in
1989 she purchased Bamboula Ltd., which imports and wholesales home
accessories
and gifts handcrafted in four African countries (Ghana, Kenya, Uganda,
and
Tanzania). For the past 17 years, the company’s mission has been
to
create work and income for African artisans by selling their
handcrafted
products to retailers in the United States. This Christmas, Bamboula
plans
to sell 200,000 African ornaments to national retailers. Twenty artisan
groups
in Kenya and Ghana will each make 10,000 ornaments.
Jasperdean currently lives in Kutztown, Pennsylvania,
where the company is based, with her husband, George Muugi, a professor
of
psychology at Kutztown University. She travels several times a year to
Africa
to work with the artisan groups that supply her business.
