1,427 Graduate During
One Hundred and First Annual
Commencement

The College
of New Rochelle celebrated its 101st Commencement as it graduated the
Class of 2008. The College awarded 1,427 baccalaureate
and masters degrees during commencement exercises on May 22,
2008
at Radio City Music Hall.

Prior to the 101st Commencement of the graduating
Class of 2008, the traditional Hooding Ceremonies were held on all the
campuses of The College of New Rochelle. Student representatives spoke

Encouraging Nurse Advocacy

The School of
Nursing launched a Nurse Advocacy Forum for nursing alumnae and senior
baccalaureate students on April 30, 2008. The new forum provides
mentoring support and networking opportunities among alumnae who are
"novice" nurses, students and faculty. Dean Mary Alice Donius, and two
faculty conveners, Professors Connie Vance and Deborah Hunt, welcomed
returning CNR alumnae: Dahlia Graham Khanns SN’07, Shari Lewis SN’07,
Meilig Moran SN’08, Rachel Nunez SN’07, Maureen O'Neill SN’07, Paulette
Jackson SN’07, Cebrena Purcell SN’07 and Yovanca Rodriquez SN’08.

The New York State Board of Regents
has appointed Dr. Walter Sullivan, Director of The College of New
Rochelle’s (CNR) Center for Educational Policy & Practice, as
Coordinator of the Regents’ Steering Committee for Standards

Homa
Sorouri Speaks On Campus

Human
rights activist and Fulbright Scholar, Homa Sorouri spoke on April 21,
2008, about “Human Rights in the Lives of Refugees: the Plight of
Stateless People” on the main campus of CNR. Ms. Sorouri's
address
was sponsored
by the International Studies Program at CNR and funded by the Deborah
and Russel Taylor Foundation.
Fun at the 36th Anual Strawberry Festival

On May 4, 2008, the 36th
Annual
Strawberry Festival was held at CNR. The campus welcomed
families, friends, and the

“Thank-A-Thon”
Too often we take things for granted at the
College, forgetting that it takes thousands of donors to finance
CNR. So on April 3, 2008 volunteers called
over 350 donors to thank them for their Annual Fund pledges.

Event held at ESPN Zone in
NYC

On April 18, 2008,
recent CNR graduates and
Alumnae/i Association board members gathered at ESPN Zone in New York
City to enjoy great food, conversation and to network. After the
reception, held in the exclusive Skybox, guests received a
complimentary game card for the Sports Arena where they played virtual

Ruchelle Austin Named
NCAA lll Rebound Champion

CNR senior
Ruchelle Austin (Brooklyn, NY) has been named the 2008 NCAA Division
III Statistical Champion for Rebounds Per Game. A member of The College
of New Rochelle’s Blue Angels basketball team, Austin had an
extraordinary season in which she led all of Division III in rebounding
(17.9 per game) and in most rebounds in one game (32). In January,
Austin had 32 rebounds against Polytechnic – the highest number in the
nation for a single game this season. m o r e

Held

The annual Honors Conference Day was held in the Student Campus Center
on the
main campus on May 1, 2008. Fourteen juniors and seniors
displayed and explained their work on various research projects to the
faculty, staff,

Integrated Media Part 2

Walking around CNR's main campus was an
artistic
experience this May when the second phase of projects by students
enrolled in
Integrated Media, an advanced
elective course for SAS art majors taught
by Professors Cristina DeGennaro and Margie Neuhaus, were on
display. The artworks
focused on an

Students Attend Annual
Honors Conference

On April 3, 2008 four CNR honors students, accompanied by Honors
Program Director Dr. Amy Bass, attended the Northeast Regional Honors
Council's annual conference in Morristown, New Jersey. The
students spent four days participating in panels and roundtable
discussions, presenting their own research, and exploring various
themes as part of the NRHC's "City as Text" field seminars.

Annual Sports Awards
Banquet Honors CNR Athletes
Over twenty
sports awards were presented to student athletes during The College of New
Rochelle's annual Sports Awards Banquet held on
May 6, 2008,
including the top Blue Angel Award to Ruth Collura SAS ’07,
and the Senior Scholar Athlete Award to Gabrielle Carrasquillo SN’08. Guest speakers were Lois Salto
SAS’84 and Ann
Fitzpatrick, SAS’85. These two women were All-Americans on CNR’s Blue

Sweeny Meets
With Plunge Participants

On April 29, 2008,
President Sweeny had dinner with some of the students who participated
in the Plunge to Guatemala in March to discuss their Plunge

The Many Advantages Of
A CNR Education

Graduating Senior Blanca Pacca SAS ’08 was interviewed in the Spring
2008 issue of the Journal News Education Outlook about the many
advantages of a CNR education that helped shape her plans for a career
in medical research. This issue marked the second Education Outlook in a row that a
CNR student was featured as the main subject of the cover article. To

Community
Service Award, given by the Class of 1980, to the graduating senior who
has exemplified outstanding service and leadership in the community.

Dr. Joan Arnold,
Professor of
Nursing,
and co-editor of the book Health
Promotion in Practice, participated in
a two-day workshop in April at Teachers College, Columbia University
that focused on this book. Dr. Arnold also presented, with Penelope
Buschman Gemma, a workshop for the NYS Chapter of the March of Dimes on
“Loss and Grieving in Pregnancy and the First Year of Life: A Caring
Resource for Nurses” on March 25. On May 15, Dr. Arnold gave the
presentation “Nursing Roles in Health Promotion and Wellness” at the
NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation annual nursing award ceremony held
at Elmhurst Hospital.
Dr. Amy Bass,
Associate History
Professor, and Director of the Honors
Program, published a book review of The Greatest Fight of Our
Generation by
Lewis Erenberg in The Journal of American Studies, Vol. 47:3/4
(fall/winter).
Dr. Susan Conte, Assistant
Professor of Guidance
& Counseling in the Graduate School, has received a fellowship to
participate in a week-long Faculty Resource Network Summer
Seminar, comprised of faculty members from representative
colleges across the U.S. The seminar, which is entitled, “Women's
Studies in a Global World: Pedagogies of Transformation,” will take
place at New York University from June 9-13, 2008
Andrea DeCapua,
Assistant Professor
of
Multilingual/ Multicultural Education in the Graduate School, and
co-author of Crossing Cultures in
Language Classroom (with Ann
Wintergerst) led a discussion with Ann Wintergerst at TESOL 2007 in
Seattle, where participants examined the concept of culture and
activities designed to heighten cultural awareness. Recent articles
by
Professor DeCapua have appeared in Educational
Leadership, Multilingua,
Journal of Pragmatics, Intercultural Pragmatics, Women and Language,
Gender and Language, Issues in Applied Linguistics, System, and The
CATESOL Journal. Her latest book, Grammar for Teachers: A Guide to
American English for Native and Non-Native Speakers, is
scheduled to be
published in 2008.
Cristina de Gennaro,
Associate
Professor
of Art in the School of Arts & Sciences, has been awarded a
fellowship for an artist residency at the Fundacion Valparaiso in
Almeria, Spain for the month of June. She will work on a new
installation artwork while there. Professor de Gennaro will also
present her installation, Improbable
Spring, at the Westchester Arts
Council Arts Exchange in White Plains, NY, as part of the
exhibition Home Growing
Conditions.
The exhibition will be on view from May 16
through July 22.
The essay “Never See Rachel
Again: Virginia Woolf and the End of
Domestic Fiction" by Dr. Nick Smart,
Associate Professor of English in
the School of Arts & Sciences, has been accepted for publication in
the Selected Papers from the 11th Annual Virginia Woolf Conference.
Dr. Walter Sullivan,
Associate
Professor
of Educational Leadership in the Graduate School and Director of CNR’s
Center for Educational Policy & Practice, has been appointed
Coordinator of the Regents’ Steering Committee for Standards Review by
the New York State Board of Regents.
