CONCERT
AT ODEON OF HEROD ATTICUS THEATRE
Things are starting to get hectic, as both media and
athletes are starting to arrive en masse in Athens. Last night I took a
bit of a break and went to see George Dalaras, a very famous Greek
singer, perform at the Odeon of Herod Atticus, an ancient theatre that
sits on the south slope of the acropolis. Considered the "newer"
theater when compared to the nearby Theater of Dionysious (Herod
Atticus was built by the Romans in 161 A.D. - that is considered
"newer" in Athens!), it is still in use today as a concert venue. It
was a nice break from all things athletic, although sitting on an
ancient marble bench seemed like an Olympic effort. Likely it will be
one of the last "touristy" things I get to do. And seeing Dalaras was
an experience - I had never heard of him, but he has sold over 10
million albums, and the audience loved him. And it was a cool thing to
be listening to Greek music in an ancient stadium with the Parthenon
above - it is beautifully lit at night and it was a really lovely
scene.
