WESTCHESTER
COLLEGE STUDENTS TAKE A
SUCCESSFUL “PLUNGE” INTO COMMUNITY SERVICE
Project benefited Impoverished Communities in Texas and Mexico

NEW ROCHELLE, NY, February
2, 2006 -- The College of New Rochelle (CNR) today announced that a
group of students, staff members and alumna from the School of Arts
& Sciences (SAS) and School of Nursing (SN) recently participated
in the “Plunge,” an annual CNR tradition of performing community
service. The January 6-13 trip marked the College’s third
international trip to Project Vida Digna (Matamoros, Mexico) and The
Brownsville Community Center (Brownsville, Texas). It is a continuation
of the Centennial Service Project launched in 2004 by Campus Ministry
to mark CNR’s 100th anniversary.
The trip marked a number of
“firsts”:
-
CNR volunteers built the largest home ever for the
Ursuline Mission. The 12’ x 24’ one-room structure now houses a family
of 10.
-
CNR distributed nearly 400 pairs of shoes to men,
women, and children. Aerosoles donated 365 pounds of new shoes,
worth approximately $6,000. In addition, a recent shoe drive conducted
by CNR’s Campus Ministry & Health Services department yielded a
number of gently used shoes for distribution as well.
-
The CNR volunteers included a freshman international
student from South Korea.
-
The nursing students led Health Assessment Workshops
in Brownsville and Matamoros to teach basic health care and disease
prevention to the residents of both communities.
CNR started the “Plunge”
more than 12 years ago to give students the opportunity to perform
community service. Ursuline nuns Sister Norma Raupple and Sister Maria
Teresa De Llano have been part of the Brownsville and Matamoros
communities for nine years. For more information on Project Vida
