Based on ten of the transformation myths in Ovid’s 2000-year-old masterpiece, the play takes a surprisingly contemporary look at love in its various human forms, wrapping folly, anxiety and rapture in a gentle mix of pathos and humor.  “Myth as public dream and dream as private myth,” is often used to describe Ovid’s stories, and it is this world that Metamorphoses explores, where people speak directly to the gods, are transformed into birds and trees, and find peace in the journey.

First produced at Northwestern University and then throughout the country, Metamorphoses found a home at Circle in the Square in New York City in March of 2002.  It has won multiple awards to date including the Tony (for Best Direction, Mary Zimmerman), Drama Desk (Best Play, Best Director), Outer Critics Circle (Best Direction), and the Drama League’s Distinguished Production of a Play.
