DR. WALTER SULLIVAN APPOINTED TO
NEW YORK STATE BOARD OF REGENTS STEERING COMMITTEE

NEW ROCHELLE, NY, April 9, 2008 – The New York State Board of Regents has appointed Dr. Walter Sullivan, Director of The College of New Rochelle’s (CNR) Center for Educational Policy & Practice, as Coordinator of the Regents’ Steering Committee for Standards Review.

The Board of Regents recently announced that it will review New York’s Learning Standards, beginning with the standards for English Language Arts (ELA) and English as a Second Language (ESL). The ELA standards will be reviewed by an ELA/ESL Content Panel comprised of teachers and school administrators, including Dr. Kate Hathaway, Assistant Professor of Literacy
at CNR.

Dr. Sullivan, Associate Professor of Educational Leadership in CNR’s Graduate School, heads The Center for Educational Policy and Practice at the College. A Superintendent of Schools for 26 years and Chairperson of the Curriculum and Instruction Committee of New York's Superintendents for 23 years, Dr. Sullivan has had a distinguished career as an educator and administrator. Established in 2007, the Center for Educational Policy and Practice provides a forum for the examination of educational trends, best practices and policies affecting Pre-K-16 education. According to Dr. Sullivan, the goal of the Center is to assist educators by sharing the resources of the College through partnerships with local school districts.  “The Center is committed to articulating and illustrating the essential role of the Liberal Arts in the preparation of educators,” said Dr. Sullivan. “Through research, programming, conferences and forums, we will engage working professionals and college faculty in critical and creative dialogue for the improvement and promotion of standards of excellence relative to educational preparation and practice.”
