TO SPEAK AT CNR HOODING
CEREMONY

ROCHELLE, NY, May 10, 2007 –The College of New Rochelle (CNR) today
announced that John J. Sweeney, President of the AFL-CIO will address
the School of Arts and Sciences Class of 2007 during its Hooding
Ceremony on Wednesday, May 23, 4:00 p.m., in Holy Family Chapel on the
Main Campus in New Rochelle. Mr. Sweeney will also be awarded an
honorary degree during CNR’s 100th Commencement Exercises the following
day, Thursday, May 24, 11:00 a.m., at Radio City Music Hall.
During the
ceremony, members of the graduating class will be presented their hoods
by Dr. Richard Thompson, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. The
hood is the most distinctive part of the traditional cap and gown
graduation costume. It is made of black fabric and trimmed in
velvet. Both the length of the hood and width of the trim vary
with the level of degree.
Born in the Bronx, New York, the son of Irish
immigrants, John J. Sweeney is a nationally acknowledged leader
committed to service for others, economic justice and political reform
in the workplace. He was elected president of the AFL-CIO in 1995
and has been re-elected three times since. He has also co-authored two
books: America Needs a Raise:
Fighting for Economic Security and Social Justice and Solutions for the New Work Force: Policies
for a New Social Contract.
