THE COLLEGE OF NEW
ROCHELLE TO HOST “SYMBIOSIS”
A WILDERNESS EXHIBITION BY
ARTIST JOHN DAY
New Rochelle, NY,
May 31, 2007 — Symbiosis, a
large-scale installation constructed of branches and vines, will be
exhibited at The College of New Rochelle’s (CNR) Mooney Center Exhibit
Hall from June 7 through June 29, 2007, with an opening reception to
take place on Sunday, June 10, from 11 am to 1 pm. The artist, John
Day, will construct the work specifically for the gallery space.
Symbiosis, defined as the coexistence of two dissimilar organisms, is
explored here in the relationship of trees and vines. Day’s
installations use materials gathered from wilderness areas in the
vicinity. His purpose is to create art that relates closely to the
environment and to encourage viewers to think about their relationship
to the natural world. The idea for each installation, whether outdoors
or indoors, is derived from the space or setting in which the work is
placed.
Material for this work has been taken from Nature Study
Woods in New Rochelle and a nature preserve on Long Island. Branches
have been gathered from the ground or from fallen trees. No living
plants have been cut, with the exception of vines which are harmful to
trees. Materials used in other installations include tree fragments,
reeds, corn stalks, bark, moss, and stones.
Since 1980, John Day has been exhibiting installations
in forest preserves and galleries in the Northeast, including New York,
New Hampshire, Connecticut, the Old State House Museum in Hartford, and
the Powell House Center in New York. He received a BFA from Cornell
University in 1967, where he studied with Jim Dine and Robert
Richenburg. His work is included in the collections of Aetna Insurance
and Pfizer.
This exhibit is appropriate for visitors of all ages. The
reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.
