THE COLLEGE OF NEW ROCHELLE APPOINTS
NEW DEAN FOR SCHOOL OF ARTS & SCIENCES

NEW ROCHELLE, NY, August 11, 2004 -- Dr. Stephen J. Sweeny, President of The College of New Rochelle (CNR), has announced the appointment of Dr. Richard Thompson as Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, effective August 1, 2004.
   
“Dr. Thompson is a very experienced, committed educator who comes to assume leadership of the School of Arts and Sciences possessing impressive personal gifts and professional expertise,” said Dr. Sweeny.  “As we embark on our next hundred years, we are confident that Dr. Thompson will be an effective leader for the School of Arts and Sciences and a strong advocate for the value of single-sex education for women.”

   
Dr. Thompson joins CNR after an 18-year career at Wheelock College in Boston, initially as a faculty member, then in positions with increasing administrative responsibilities. The majority of his career has focused on Child Development, especially on the emotional care of children and their families in health care settings.  In his most recent role as Dean of Child and Family Studies at Wheelock, Dr. Thompson had oversight for graduate and undergraduate programs in Child Life and Family-Centered Care, Child Development, Family Studies, Human Services, and Birth to Three: Development and Intervention.  He was also responsible for: hiring, mentoring and evaluation of faculty; budget development and management; as well as overall planning and program development in conjunction with Arts and Sciences faculty for the Child and Family Studies Division.


Dr. Thompson’s career has included positions as: Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the College of Medicine, University of Chicago and Director of Child Life and Family Education Department, University of Chicago Medical Center; as well as child-life oriented positions with Edgewood College (MN), Utica College of Syracuse University (NY), and Minneapolis Children’s Health Center (MN).  A prolific author, Dr. Thompson has written several books and articles on children in hospital settings, participated in national research projects on this topic, and served as Co-Editor of Children’s Health Care, a research journal on the psychosocial care of children and families in pediatric settings.


Dr. Thompson was graduated from Carleton College with a B.A. in History, the University of Louisville with an M.A.T. in Elementary Education, and from the University of Wisconsin at Madison with a Ph.D. in Child and Family Studies.  He and his family reside in New Rochelle, NY.



The first Catholic college for women in New York State, The College of New Rochelle was founded in 1904 by the Ursuline Order. Today, it comprises the all-women School of Arts & Sciences, and three schools which admit women and men: the School of New Resources (for adult learners), the School of Nursing and the Graduate School.  The main campus of the College is located in lower Westchester County, 16 miles north of New York City.  The College maintains six other campus locations in New York City.
