THE COLLEGE OF NEW ROCHELLE CONTINUES
COLLEGE-WIDE VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE

NEW ROCHELLE, NY, September 16, 2004 -- During the fall semester, The College of New Rochelle (CNR) will continue a voter registration campaign launched earlier this year at the College’s six campuses in Westchester and New York City.  A joint collaboration between the College’s Office of Government Relations, Student Services and other departments, CNR initiated their efforts during the spring 2004 semester by enclosing voter materials in all course registration packets. Through a series of upcoming events, CNR hopes to increase the number of voters by October 8, the deadline for voter registration in New York State. The campaign will also provide an opportunity for dialogue among faculty, staff, students and members of the community about key issues that will loom large for the 2004 presidential election and in the years to come.

“During this election year, it is essential that all American citizens -- particularly college students -- make their votes count,” said Dr. Ellen Curry Damato, Executive Vice President at CNR.  The college’s scheduled activities will include:

The voter registration drive is part of CNR’s continuing efforts to encourage civic participation among its faculty, staff and students.  The College accomplishes this goal by:
  • Offering for-credit courses such as “The Politics of
    Health Care (School of Nursing) and “Applied Politics” (School of Arts & Sciences);
  • Including voter registration materials in all course registration packets for the fall semester;

  • Encouraging students to participate in cIcu Lobby Days
    in Albany and in e-advocacy campaigns that involve hundreds of colleges and universities across New York State; and
  • Supporting community groups such as the League for Women Voters to foster intergenerational awareness of campaign issues.

The first Catholic college for women in New York State, The College of New Rochelle was founded in 1904 by the Ursuline Order. Today, it comprises the all-women School of Arts & Sciences, and three schools which admit women and men: the School of New Resources (for adult learners), the School of Nursing and the Graduate School.  The main campus of the College is located in lower Westchester County, 16 miles north of New York City.  The College maintains six other campus locations in New York City.
