CASTLE GALLERY SHOWCASES ARTIST LAURA JAMES

5:00, Laura James
NEW
ROCHELLE, NY, September 20, 2007 – In December, The College of New
Rochelle’s (CNR) Castle Gallery will present the second exhibit of its
2007-08 season, Fifteen Years: The
Art of Laura James, curated by Jennifer Zazo. The exhibit will
open on December 2, 2007 and run through February 24, 2008. There will
be an opening reception on Sunday, December 9, from 2 – 4 pm.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, Laura James is a self-taught painter of Antiguan
heritage who paints religious subjects and visual dramatizations of
Bible stories using iconography found in Ethiopian Christian Art. She
is also an award-winning artist of secular works. Using bright colors,
intricate patterns, and sometimes surreal imagery, she paints women,
families, and scenes of everyday life. Her current project, a series of
paintings entitled Nannies and Other Mothers, deals with a subject she
believes has been long neglected by popular culture - the stories of
countless women who leave their families to travel to America, the
United Kingdom, or Canada in search of a better life, taking jobs as
domestic workers. Her work is widely collected, exhibited, and
published.
The Castle Gallery was
established in 1980 as an art resource for the entire community.
Dedicated to teaching and committed to providing a rich diversity of
art experiences, the Gallery serves school groups and art lovers from
throughout Westchester County and the New York Metropolitan area with
innovative exhibits, lectures, and programs. The Gallery is located on
the main campus of CNR, 29 Castle Place, New Rochelle, NY. Castle
