YULETIDE SEASON WITH FAMILY-FRIENDLY EVENTS

NEW ROCHELLE, NY, November 4, 2004 -- The College of New Rochelle is planning to host a plethora of family friendly events to celebrate the upcoming holidays.  The events, which are all free and open to the public, take place at CNR’s Main Campus at 29 Castle Place. 


Roses in December Remembrance

Please join us for a community soup and salad supper and a prayer service in the Chapel, to remember the lives of four American women who were martyred in 1980 while working with the poor in El Salvador.  (** Discretion is advised for children under age 12)


Reception and Concert for Art Exhibit on the Black Madonna
Sunday, December 5, 2:00-4:00 pm, Castle Gallery
Concert to immediately follow at 4:00 pm in Romita Auditorium

Long recognized as a symbol of transformation and change, the Black Madonna is often viewed as our Earth Goddess and Mother to all humanity. It is a major icon in the Christian faith. The images of the Virgin Mother portrayed as a dark woman symbolize majesty and power, a love of great strength, powerful, unbroken and enduring. CNR will spotlight the work 12 multi-ethnic female artists, each of whom was invited to create work specifically for this exhibit. The works include: assemblage (paintings done with rocks and other found objects); ceramic reliefs; encaustics (mixture of oil and wax); installation; oil painting; video; and wall drawings.  At 4:00 pm, the Italian theater group, I Giullari Di Piazza, will perform in Romita Auditorium.


Exhibit of “Return of the Crèche:
Nativity Scenes from Around the World”

The exhibition features more than a dozen unique crèches from a collection compiled by alumna Eileen Canty and her husband, Jim, from their world travels over the past two
decades. The exhibit will be on display until January 2, 2005.


Tree Lighting and Creche Blessing Ceremony

Join members of the CNR community as we observe Advent with special blessings and the lighting of the 10-feet tall Christmas tree.  Hot apple cider will await holiday revelers!

Screening of A&E Biography on Mary Magdalene

Adults are welcome at CNR’s screening of a biography on Mary Magdalene.  This movie is not recommended for children under age 12.  Child programming for this event will include guided gallery tours with a worksheet for children and their families.

The first Catholic college for women in New York State, The College of New Rochelle was founded in 1904 by the Ursuline Order.
