Art Education Faculty Position

The Graduate School of the College of New Rochelle invites applications and nominations for a tenure-track faculty position in Art Education in our Art and Communication Studies Division, position available July 1, 2008.

Our education programs include: Art Education, Childhood Education, Creative Teaching and Learning (Gifted Education), Early Childhood Education, Literacy Education (Reading), Multicultural/Multilingual Education (TESOL), and Special Education, as well as programs in Educational Leadership.

Join our team of dedicated professionals. Our beautiful 20-acre campus is located in Westchester County near Long Island Sound, and is easily accessible to midtown Manhattan by public transportation.

Qualifications and Position Responsibilities
Doctorate in Education or related field (ABD considered) with at least three years experience as a classroom teacher. Expertise in one area of studio art with an exhibition record preferred.  Our two programs are designed for students who wish to enter the field as well as those already certified in art.  We use a Discipline-Based Art Education model as well as the National and New York State Visual Arts Learning Standards as the basis for courses in curriculum, assessment, visual culture, art for special needs, technology, multicultural competence, methods, applications in the schools, quantitative research methodology, and thesis. Current studio involvement and experience with galleries and museums would be a plus. The ideal candidate is a team player who is deeply dedicated to the field.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching graduate courses

  • Advising and mentoring students;

  • Supervising student teachers in art;

  •  Developing relationships with area schools;

  • Doing scholarly work; and

  •  Participating in school, campus, state, and national professional and service activities.

The Graduate School
The Graduate School, founded in 1969 in response to the needs of working professionals, offers Master’s degree programs in the areas of Education, Human Services, and Art and Communication Studies. Certificates and professional diplomas are also offered in selected professional areas.

The Graduate School offers the Master of Science in Education degree in the fields of Childhood Education, Creative Teaching and Learning (Gifted Education), Early Childhood Education, Literacy Education, Multilingual/Multicultural Education (TESOL), Special Education; it offers the Master of Science degree in the fields of Art Therapy, Art Therapy Counseling, Career Development, Communication Studies, Educational Leadership, Guidance and Counseling, Gerontology, Mental Health Counseling, School Psychology, and Studio Art; it offers the Master of Arts degree in Art Education. Advanced graduate certificate programs are offered in Bilingual Education, Communication Studies, Creative Teaching and Learning (Gifted Extension), Guidance and Counseling, School Building Leader, and Thanatology (Grief Counseling). A School District Leader Professional Diploma program is also available.

The first Catholic college for women in New York State, The College of New Rochelle was founded in 1904 by the Ursuline Order. Today, it comprises the all-women School of Arts & Sciences, and three schools which admit women and men: the School of New Resources (for adult learners), the School of Nursing and the Graduate School.  The main campus of the College is located in lower Westchester County, 16 miles north of New York City.  The College maintains five other campus locations in New York City.
