Auditions will be held for the musical "Ragtime" at The College of New Rochelle on September 7, 8, and 12, on the main campus of the College.
The production will be directed by CNR's Laurie Peterson Castaldo, with musical direction by Kurt Kelley and choreography by Juan Borona. CNR Drama, the college's student-run dramatic society, is producing. Performances of Ragtime will run from November 15 to 24, 2013.
"We're very excited that this show is our season opener," said CNR senior Regina Alvarado, Vice President of CNR Drama. "It has a fabulous story, a gorgeous score, and it takes place in New Rochelle at about the same time that CNR was established in the early 1900s. More importantly, we are offering it as part of the City of New Rochelle's 325th anniversary celebration."
The musical is based on E.L. Doctorow's famous novel about the changing face of our population at the start of the American Century. Laced with historical characters like Harry Houdini, Booker T. Washington and Henry Ford, it tells of a fictional New Rochelle family with "a house on the crest of the Broadview Avenue hill," and what happens when they come to know a talented pianist from Harlem, the young woman he loves, and a Latvian immigrant and his daughter seeking the American dream.
Director Castaldo said she is looking to cast 30 singer/actors in a diverse ensemble that will cover nearly 100 roles. "It's a bold undertaking, but we've been able to mount large productions here before, and I know we will find the talent," she said. "Romita Auditorium is one of the best theatres in Westchester – intimate and engaging, and the acoustics are terrific. Actors love to perform here."
