The College of New Rochelle Presents Alumna Darcel Reyes, RN-BSN '96 at 2013 Global Health Conference
NEW ROCHELLE, NY, November 4, 2013 — The College of New Rochelle will hold its Fall 2013 Global Health Conference on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, from 5 to 8 p.m. in Romita Auditorium in the Mooney Center.
The keynote address “Global is Really Local” to be delivered by The College of New Rochelle alumna, Darcel Reyes RN-BSN ’96, will describe her February 2013 volunteer mission to Haiti with an NGO and Haitian healthcare professionals, and discuss the need to create international partnerships and the vital roles played by nurses.
The program will begin with Welcome remarks by staff from The College of New Rochelle School of Nursing program, including program organizer, Dr. Marie Santiago. Following the presentation there will be an open forum and discussion.
Darcel Reyes, RN, MSN, AAHIVS, is a nurse practitioner who specializes in the care of people living with HIV (PLWH) and people who are homeless. This year, Ms. Reyes was the recipient of the Rita C. Kopf Grant from the New York Nurses Foundation and a research grant from the Alpha Phi of Sigma Theta Tau. Presently she is working on two research projects that aim to understand and address health literacy barriers among PLWH. This past February 2013, Ms. Reyes was instrumental in helping CapraCare, an NGO, establish community based healthcare services in Le Cayes, Haiti.
Previously, in her role as educational consultant for the NY/NJ AIDS Education and Training Center (NY/NJ AETC), Ms. Reyes designed and implemented educational programs for healthcare professionals and developed educational webinars for nurses. Ms. Reyes has published on a variety of topics including health literacy, treatment of anxiety in PLWH, and the importance of nursing theory to the provision of patient care. The Association of Nurses in Aids Care (ANAC) recently appointed her as the national chairperson of its Diversity Committee. In both 2010 and 2012, The Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence named Ms. Reyes a Jonas Nurse Scholar Leader.
