The College of New Rochelle enjoyed the first win of the season as it hosted its annual Invitational Basketball Tournament on December 11 and 12. The tournament was compiled of four teams: Berkeley College, New York City College of Technology (NYCCT), College of Notre Dame of Maryland, and The College of New Rochelle.

“It was very exciting to have our first win. It was a complete team effort and I am extremely proud of this team right now" said Coach Susan Kern. “We had some great hustle plays where girls were diving to the ground and chasing balls down the court. Just as they've shown all season, these ladies refused to give up. We kept chipping away until we finally took the lead.”

The Blue Angels captured the victory over Berkley College Knights (44-39) in the first game of the Tournament and finished second overall against NYCCT (1-6). Tournament officials voted Saysha Salgado and Julia Dempson as Tournament MVPs. Salgado finished with 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals, and Dempson had 12 points, 14 rebounds, and 4 steals.

Game Recap: Blue Angels 44, Knights 39

The Blue Angels were hesitant in the first half of the game against the Knights. After six minutes, CNR knew that the Knights were no threat to their offense, but would be dominant on the block down low. The Knights possessed height, which the Blue Angels lacked, so shooting the ball around the perimeter was a key component for CNR.

Bringing the first half to a close, Elizabeth Johnston made a huge shot to put the Blue Angels down by only 4 points.  Her teammate Saysha Solgado capitalized on Johnston’s momentum and came up with a big steal as the Knights tried to get a buzzer beater shot before half time (28-24). The Blue Angels opened up the second half with full force, and began making sharp passes, consistent ball movement, and driving to the basket.

"We were very aggressive when it counted the most. We were able to get some players in foul trouble and capitalize while they were on the bench" said Coach Kern.

Laguinta Stuart and Kathia Williams grabbed some big rebounds which contributed to the Blue Angels taking the lead by 5. Johnston finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 steals, and put up some crucial shots to help her team stay afloat. Janine Jones had 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals.
