The Trustee Gala Honors the Dedicated Work of President Stephen J. Sweeny
More than 400 faculty, staff, alumnae/i, and friends of The College of New Rochelle gathered on April 7, 2011 at the Trustee Gala to pay tribute to Dr. Stephen J. Sweeny, who will retire in June 2011 after 35 years of service to the College, including 14 years as President. On a beautiful evening at Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle, guests enjoyed the views of Long Island Sound during the cocktail hour, before moving upstairs for dinner.
During the dinner, Michael Ambler, Chairman of the CNR Board of Trustees and Gala Co-Chair, said “When we go our separate ways at the end of this enjoyable evening, it will be the College’s students who will benefit most from this occasion – in the modeling of a life well lived by President Sweeny.” He was later joined by fellow trustees and Gala co-chairs Hugh Johnston and Elizabeth LeVaca for the announcement of the renaming of the College’s Student Campus Center in honor of Dr. Sweeny. The Center, to be dedicated on May 20, 2011 will be renamed the Sweeny Student Center. As a gift, an artist’s rendering of the building was presented to Dr. Sweeny.
The College was particularly honored to welcome The Most Reverend Dennis J. Sullivan, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of New York, who gave the invocation, and The Most Reverend Francis A. Chullikatt, Titular Archbishop of Ostra, Apostolic Nuncio, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, who gave the benediction.
Among those in attendance to honor Dr. Sweeny were Sr. Mary Sullivan, O.S.U., Provincial, Ursuline Provincialate, Eastern Province of the United States; Sr. Ann Peterson, O.S.U., Prioress, Convent of St. Teresa’s; Rabbi Amiel Wohl, Rabbi Emeritus, Temple Israel of New Rochelle; The Very Rev. Dr. James Kowalski, Cathedral Dean, The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine; Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, Executive Director of The Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York; Saul Cohen, longstanding member of the New York State Education Department’s Board of Regents; and Rosa Napoleone, President of the CNR Alumnae/i Association.
