CNR Wins Season Opener against Cooper Union 68-15, Raises Money for Recuperating Student

MediaLibrary#5285The College of New Rochelle women’s basketball team opened their season Tuesday night as they defeated Cooper Union 68-15.  The Blue Angels two sensational freshmen Alyssa Pechin and Tra’Leassa King combined for 44 points and 17 rebounds to lead CNR to a 1-0 start.

"We had an incredible energy from the women on the court, from the bench and from the large crowd fans in the stands," said Coach Susan Kern. "Tra-Leassa King dominated in the paint and had many blocks on the defensive end. Tempestt Harris-Bucknor was a presence as well as Holly Cammarota, who played a very tough physical game. We dominated offensive and defensive rebounds. We played as a team and each player contributed to our success," added Coach Kern.

CNR came out ready to play in the first half as the Blue Angels quickly went on a 16-2 run to take a controlling lead early in the game.  The run was lead by Tra’Leassa King who scored 12 of CNR first 16 points.  Cooper Union had no answers for King, as the freshmen totaled 23 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 2 steals in 18 minutes of work in the first half.  Holly Cammarota added 7 points and 3 assists. Freshmen Alyssa Pechin also started her career off well as Pechin recorded 11 points on 5 of 9 shooting in the first half.  Pechin and King 34 points gave CNR a commanding lead as CNR went into halftime up 38-9.

MediaLibrary#5286"Alyssa has no fear when she's out there," Coach Kern said. "She's not afraid to take a charge when a player twice her size comes at her. Her ball control allows her to weave through most players, and she has the ability to get to the basket and score or dish it off to a teammate. She's constantly hustling, chasing down loose balls, getting her hands in the passing lane. She is also an offensive threat. She will continue to lead this team throughout the season."

The Blue Angels did not let up in the second half as CNR quickly went on a 15-4 run increasing their lead to 54-13.  CNR moved the ball around in the second half as nine different players scored in the half leading the Blue Angels to a 68-15 victory. CNR defense was impressive all night as they held Cooper Union to 13 percent shooting in the second half and 14 percent for the game.  King finished the her night with an impressive stat line as she totaled 29 points, 14 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 4 steals.  Pechin finished with 15 points and 4 steals.

The night was a success in other ways as well. The College Community on the Main Campus in New Rochelle were also there in support of Rajwant Sandhu, a School of Arts & Sciences student who suffered a sudden heart attack this past summer and is now recovering. Students gathered in The Wellness Center and invited fans at the game to purchase raffle tickets, baked goods, and other items with all proceeds going towards Rajwant's medical expenses.
