Family, Friends, and Community Remember Mary Fischer Bell ’34 on her 100th Birthday

MediaLibrary#5867Mary Fischer Bell ’34 was remembered on June 25, 2012, on what would have been her 100th birthday, by family, friends, and the College Community. Mary was a loved and admired alumna of the College, and was awarded both the Ursula Laurus Citation and Angela Merici Medal.
Mary, her husband Ralph, and her family established a scholarship fund on Mary’s 75th birthday, and instead of exchanging birthday presents, Mary and Ralph would each make gifts to the CNR scholarship fund that they had established, which they continued for the rest of their lives. The family also provided funding for the Reading Room in Gill Library.
Mary was born in New Jersey, grew up in the Bronx, and after graduating from Ursuline Academy, earned a B.A. in history from CNR. She married Ralph Bell in 1943, taught fifth grade for a short time, and then devoted her life to her three daughters and their families, The College of New Rochelle, Epiphany Parish, the Girl Scouts, AAUW, and many other organizations fortunate enough to benefit from her genuine care and devotion.
Mary was both a class officer and an active member of the Alumnae/i Association Board of Directors.  She especially enjoyed hosting CNR graduates at the New York City Ballet or at the annual Sardi’s luncheons.  She was the “mother” to so many senior classes – each spring they were her special guests in Manhattan for some refreshment and warm congratulations before graduation. In 1979 she chaired the College’s 75th Diamond Jubilee anniversary at Tavern on the Green.  Her daughter, Elizabeth Bell LeVaca, is a member of the College’s Board of Trustees, and donated the Wellness Center Contemplation Garden in loving remembrance of her mother and father.
