Basketball head coach Kashif Hameed has been named Women's Basketball Coach of the Year by the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference, while two of his players received multiple accolades, highlighting an excellent season for the Blue Angels.
Hameed, in his first season at the helm after two years as an assistant coach, led the team to 10 wins -- the most for a CNR squad since 1999-2000 -- and a berth in the HVWAC finals. The Blue Angels have now increased their win total for four straight seasons. Under Hameed's tutelage, the Blue Angels improved in nearly every statistical category.
This season, CNR players have been named HVWAC Player of the Week on three occasions and HVWAC Rookie of the Week five times.
Freshman center Jasmine Brandon was named to the HVWAC All-Conference Team for leading the Blue Angels with 16.8 points and 9.3 rebounds a game, while making 52 percent of her shots. Her field goal percentage was tops in the conference, and she ranked in the top 10 in points, rebounds, free throw percentage, and steals.
Brandon was named HVWAC Player of the Week on November 27, 2012, and was named the conference Rookie of the Week five times, just one shy of the conference record.
Brandon was also named Women's Basketball Player of the Week on February 12, 2013, by the Association of Division III Independents. She averaged over 20 points and 7 rebounds a game, converting more than 56 percent of her shots, to win the honor for the fourth time this season.
The following week, guard Alyssa Pechin SAS'15 averaged 21.3 points, 5 assists and nearly 6 steals a game on her way to being named Player of the Week by both HVWAC and AD3I. She led the Blue Angels to two wins in that span.
The sophomore business major was also named Student-Athlete of the Month for January 2013 by AD3I, averaging over 16 points and 4 steals, assists, rebounds a game. She was AD3I's Rookie of the Year last season.
