Evaliz, where are you from?
I was born in San Juan,
Puerto Rico.

Tell
us something about your family
My father is an architect and my mother is a pharmacist.
They are from
Puerto Rico. I have three wonderful children of my own, born during the
course of my marriage. I am now a single parent.

Why
did you decide to go to college?
I had always wanted to attend college, but due to my
early marriage and
the birth of my children, I could not afford to attend school. After my
separation, I found myself at a cross-road in my life, and because of a
desire, and necessity, I decided to continue my education.

Why
did you decide to attend The College of New Rochelle?
The College of New Rochelle makes higher education
possible for someone
like myself: an adult student and a single mother. By obtaining six
credits per class, I was able to finish my class work within a
reasonable period of time. If it wasn’t for the School of New Resources
curriculum and classes, it would have taken me years and years to get a
college degrees, and with three children to support and care for, I
could have never afforded the time or money.

What
is the most challenging part about being a student?
I would say maintaining a balance between family and
education. As a
single parent, my children need me to provide them with love, stability
and a positive role model. As a student, I have the responsibility of
submitting excellent work and on time. Keeping these two parts of life
in balance has been the most challenging aspect of being a student.

When
do you attend classes?
I attend classes in the evening at CNR’s John Cardinal
O’Connor Campus.
This semester I have classes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Do
you have any favorite teachers?
Absolutely! Some of my favorite teachers are Adjunct
Professors: Herb
Boyd, Gay Lee, Drake Drakeford, Franklyn Edwards, Dr. Levere, and Dr.
DeSalle, Assistant Dean for Curriculum and Instruction in the School of
New Resources. By their encouragement and dedication to teaching, they
have left a profound impression on me.

What
has surprised you the most about CNR?
Two things: the quality of the professors and the
availability of the
Instructional Staff. Also, I have been surprised (and thrilled!) at
being able to attend Summer Institutes. The Institutes have given me
the chance to obtain six credits in one month of intensive weekend
classes.

When
do you expect to graduate?
This coming May. I will then pursue a dual-masters
degree in science
and law at Columbia University. It is a dream come true for me, all
thanks to The College of New Rochelle.
