Art Therapy Requirements
The B.F.A. Degree in Art Therapy
The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree requires 60 credits in Liberal Studies and 60 credits in Professional Studies and studio electives.

In addition to studio foundations, colloquia, and art history requirements, students completing a B.F.A.  degree in Art Therapy take studio electives and professional courses in Art Therapy. B.F.A. Art Therapy majors fulfill their internship requirement through an internship and may elect to complete a research paper. A senior who has demonstrated outstanding competency may be chosen by the Art Department faculty to present a solo exhibition. (Please note: the B.F.A. degree programs in Art Therapy require more than 120 credits.)

I. Art Colloquia and Seminar (12 credits)

ART 290 Sophomore Art Colloquium (1.5 cr. each semester)
ART 390 Junior Art Seminar (1.5 cr. each semester)
ART 490 Senior Art Seminar (1.5 cr. each semester)

II. Art History (12 credits)
ARH 100 Survey of Western Art (3 cr.)
One of the following (3 cr.):
ARH 110 Survey of Indian/Islamic Art
ARH 120 Survey of Eastern Art
ARH 130 Survey of African Art
Both of the following (6 cr.):
ARH 370 Twentieth Century Art in Europe (3 cr.)
ARH 375 Art Since 1945 (3 cr.)

Professional Studies
Included in the 60 credits in Professional Studies are the following required courses:

III. Senior Thesis, Internship, Senior Project, and Exhibition (6-9 credits)

All B.F.A. candidates must register for ART 497Z Senior Project in their senior year. A candidate for the B.F.A. degree participates in a group exhibit that demonstrates a proficiency with new work based on a theme or specialization in conjunction with a group theme. Seniors who demonstrate outstanding competency may be chosen by the faculty to present a solo exhibition. B.F.A. candidates may also elect to enroll in ART 494 Senior Research (3 cr.) and complete a senior thesis paper. All B.F.A. majors require an internship experience and must register for ART 495Z Internship in either their junior or senior year.


The B.S. Degree in Art Therapy
The Bachelor of Science degree requires 60 credits in Liberal Studies and 60 credits in
Professional Studies.
Through our B.S. program in Art Therapy, students gain proficiency in studio art and develop an extensive background in psychology, enabling them to prepare for graduate work in art therapy, leading to accreditation as an art therapist. All methodology courses in Art Therapy are taught by a registered art therapist. Students in Art Therapy may also complete the School of Arts & Sciences program for initial Teacher Certification: Visual Arts Grades K-12 (see Art Education for Teacher Certification: Visual Art K-12 requirements).

The Art Therapy internship is supervised by an art therapist in a therapeutic setting.

III. Studio Electives (27 credits)
The B.S. Art Therapy major must take 27 credits in studio electives.

IV. Senior Thesis, Senior Project, and Senior Exhibition (3-6 credits)

During her senior year, the candidate for a B.S. degree in Art Therapy must register  for ART 497Z Senior Project (1.5 cr. each semester), and participate in a group exhibition of a retrospective nature. Students may elect to take ATH 494 Senior Research: Art Therapy (0-3 cr.) completing a research paper in Art Therapy.
