Common Problems & Solutions (CNR Wireless)
If you are experiencing intermittent disconnection to CNR Wireless network, do the following:
- Verify that CNR Wireless is at the top of your network list.
- It is possible that CNR Wireless is not the first entry in your preferred wireless network list. Making this change from your wireless utility (from the taskbar or control panel), will allow your computer to get the optimal wireless signal and won’t need to compete against other networks in your range.
- Verify that your wireless driver is up to date.
- Check your wireless driver’s version.
- On the Dell Latitude laptop, you can right click on your wireless radio and select About to see such information. As of September 20, 2007, the latest driver’s version was 4.170.25.12
- On the MacBook, verify that your Operating System is up to date by going into the Apple menu, and select Software Update. You can also update the Airport Utility by going into the Hard Drive, Utilities and open the Airport Utility.
- If your laptop’s wireless signal is low (less than 2-3 bars), try moving closer to an access point.
- Students in the laptop program can use the ‘Restore CNR Network Settings’ program under Start, Programs, Accessories (only Dell Latitude users).
Common Problems & Solutions (Home)
Home wireless routers typically come with a standard name such as; linksys, netgear, wireless, default, etc. Keeping the standard name of your home wireless router may cause connectivity conflicts with other wireless networks nearby. We recommend changing the name to your new wireless network to a unique name that you will be able to remember (e.g. 12mi34, wir3less78). You should refrain from using a name that could easily identify you (e.g. name, birthday, street address).
If you do not want other people connecting to your wireless network from nearby locations or eavesdropping on your communications, you may also choose to password protect it with WPA-PSK or WEP key
- Change the initial settings and name of your home network.
- Changing the settings will protect your privacy as well as prevent possible conflicts connecting accidentally to other nearby wireless networks.
