Studio Art

Assistant Dean: John Patton, Chapel Hall G-11, 914-654-5279

Master of Science Degree in Studio Art M.S.–36 credits

The Master of Science degree in Studio Art is designed for students pursuing studies in either Fine Arts or Graphic Design/Illustration. To enable students to successfully enter the professional art world, the Division encourages concentration in one studio area plus a choice of studio electives that support and broaden the expressive tools available to the student. Practicing artists and designers from the greater Manhattan area comprise the faculty and serve as mentors and role models. A 6-credit supervised apprenticeship is completed in area museums, galleries and artists’ studios. The program does not subscribe to one particular mode of expression, and is flexible in approach. Students are encouraged to define their own directions and to pursue course work with the goal of attaining a level of independently planned projects under the sponsorship of an artist-mentor. The interaction among structured required courses, supervised apprenticeships, studio concentration, and independent projects is designed to accommodate the needs of the student and to provide entry into the art community.

The Fine Arts specialization offers study in drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, printmaking, photography, computer graphics, papermaking, pastel painting and watercolor. Through course work and apprenticeship, the students are prepared to deal realistically with the practical exigencies of the art world. Students have the opportunity to explore the contemporary art world through lecture courses and visits to area museums and galleries. As students work closely with one or more practicing artists in the New York/Westchester and lower Connecticut regions, they are assisted in understanding and articulating their own position within the art world.

Specialization in Graphic Design/Illustration is designed to train qualified students to successfully enter the graphics art market as artists with sophisticated knowledge of the graphics related computer software and their applications.
