Master of Science in Education leading to initial certification in
TESOL (42 credits)
The Multilingual/Multicultural program offers a Master of Science degree and initial
New York State certification in TESOL, Teaching English to Speakers of Other
Languages.
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
The College’s Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Program recognizes the diversity of linguistic backgrounds and cultures which characterize families and schools in the New York metropolitan area. Our master’s program stresses language and linguistics, methodology in ESL, cultural awareness, and special developmental needs. We prepare our graduates to teach English to speakers of other languages in the pre-kindergarten, elementary, and secondary grades (Pre-K-12). Through the knowledge, skills, and cultural sensitivities offered by the program, prospective teachers are enabled to address the needs of children whose primary language is other than English. In addition, prospective teachers will have demonstrated that they meet or exceed the TESOL/NCATE Professional Standards.
Students completing requirements for a Master of Science degree in Education and other New York State requirements are eligible for initial certification to teach English to speakers of other languages.
Admission
All approved New York State programs for certification in TESOL require candidates
to have completed a bachelor’s degree with a concentration in one of the liberal
arts or sciences and one year of college-level study, or its equivalent (12 credits), of a
language and culture other than English. Candidates are encouraged to study at least
one language to an advanced level rather than to study various languages only at the
beginning level; communicative competence in at least one language is preferred. N.B. “Language” includes American Sign Language. “Equivalency” includes CLEP testing or
certification of equivalency by such an approved institution of higher education as New
York University. If applicants have not completed one year of college-level study, or its
equivalent, of a language and culture other than English, they must do so while they are
completing the requirements for the master’s degree. Applicants must also have 6 credits
each in mathematics, science, social science, and English language arts.
All applicants are governed by the general admission requirements for The Graduate School and must submit the following:
