Mission Statement

The College of New Rochelle, founded in 1904 by the Ursuline Order, is an independent College which is Catholic in origin and heritage. Its primary purpose is the intellectual development of persons through the maintenance of the highest standards of academic excellence and educational growth.  From this tradition the College derives its dedication to the education of women and men in the liberal arts and in professional studies. Building on its original commitment to women, the College also reaches out to those who have not previously had access to higher education; it places particular emphasis on the concept of lifelong learning.

The College is committed to a respect and concern for each individual. It seeks to challenge students to achieve the full development of their individual talents and a greater understanding of themselves. It encourages the examination of values through the creative and responsible use of reason. The College strives to articulate its academic tradition and religious heritage in ways that are consonant with the best contemporary understandings of both. It provides opportunities for spiritual growth in a context of freedom and ecumenism.  Finally, with justice as its guiding principle, the College tries to respond to the needs of society through its educational programs and service activities and through fostering the concept of education-for-service.

Philosophy

The School of Nursing’s philosophy and objectives are congruent with the mission statement and purposes of its parent institution, The College of New Rochelle.

The purpose of The College of New Rochelle School of Nursing is to provide programs of academic excellence that will prepare professional nurses to provide service to society. The undergraduate program is based on a strong foundation of liberal arts and sciences and professional studies. The faculty believe that nursing as a service profession has a primary responsibility to address the health care needs of individuals, families, and groups in the community. The professional nurse is a responsible and accountable member of society, who is committed to lifelong learning and education. Lifelong learning requires the continuous pursuit of diverse opportunities for intellectual growth that will enable the nurse to respond to the needs of society and advance to full participation and leadership in society.

The undergraduate programs prepare a nurse generalist who practices in a variety of settings with clients of all ages from diverse and multicultural populations. The generalist can assume beginning leadership roles and facilitate change to improve the quality of client care in the health care system. The program provides a foundation for ongoing professional development and graduate study in nursing.

The philosophy of the Master’s Program is grounded in an holistic world view that recognizes caring/healing as the foundation for preparing a nurse professional at an advanced level of practice.

The Masters Program prepares a nurse professional at an advanced level of practice.  The advanced practice nurse is conversant in social and political arenas that influence social and health care policy on local, state, national, and international levels. The nurse who is prepared at the Master’s level can contribute to theory and research development in nursing and to the advancement of the profession. The program provides a foundation for ongoing professional development and for doctoral study in nursing.
