Mathematics Major

The requirements for the Mathematics major, in addition to the requirements of the School of Arts and Sciences consists of 39 credit hours in Mathematics and 8 credits in Physics. Along with three MTH electives, the required CNR mathematics courses are:

The Bachelor of Arts degree will be awarded in this major with 39 credit hours. The Bachelor of Science degree will be awarded with an additional 16 credits in Chemistry, Biology, and/or Mathematics at the level of majors in that discipline. Both degrees require successful completion of MTH 121, 122, and 213 with a minimum grade of C-.  Majors must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.3 in major courses in order to continue in the program.

Mathematics Departmental Honors

Senior Mathematics majors who have: (1) an overall grade point average greater than or equal to 3.0, (2) a major grade point average greater than or equal to 3.5 in major courses, (3) no grade less than C- in a major course, and (4) completed a senior thesis will be awarded departmental honors upon graduation.

The major prepares students for graduate study in pure or applied mathematics, mathematics education, computer science, statistics, business administration, actuarial science and also prepares students for secondary and primary school teaching, medical or dental school, or employment upon graduation in business, government, or industry.

Professional Studies in Education: Mathematics

Mathematics students who complete the requirements for the B.S. or the B.A. degree in Mathematics may wish to pursue New York State teacher certification to teach on the high school or middle school levels. Specific course work is outlined in the Education section of the Arts & Sciences catalog. Additional programs available to students in this department include childhood education (Grades 1-6), early childhood education, and education of students with disabilities.
