ANNOUNCES
2005 SERVIAM AWARD HONOREES
NEW ROCHELLE, NY, September
30, 2005 -- The College of New Rochelle today announced the five
honorees of the 2005 Serviam Award from The Ursuline Institute at
CNR. This award is given annually to students who best embody the
Ursuline philosophy of serviam, i.e., “I will serve,” in recognition of
their outstanding volunteer work. Since the foundation of the Order of
St. Ursula in 1535, serviam has been the motto of schools affiliated
with Ursuline ministries. This year’s award will be presented on
October 20, 2005 at CNR’s Founders Day celebration to:
Bethany Bellino (School of Nursing; Resident of Steep
Falls, ME)
At home, Bethany volunteers at Preble Street soup kitchen for the
homeless in Portland, Maine. She also helps conduct fund-raising
programs at two local churches. While at CNR, Bethany performs
community service at the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle and Hale
House in New York City. She has also helped raise funds for the College
service project in Matamoros, Mexico.
Julia Geronimo (School of Arts and Sciences; Resident of
Shenorock, NY)
Near her home, Julia has volunteered for several years at the Katonah
Community Center, helping to make a wide range of services available to
all members of the community. Her CNR volunteer work
includes serving at Hale House, chairing the ”Take Back the Night”
event which addresses issues of violence against women, and
participating in an outreach project at the Doyle Senior Citizens
Center. She helped set up a pro bono clinic with the New Rochelle
Bar Association. Julia is the recipient of its Whitney Young
award from the Westchester Division of the National Association of
Social Workers.
Nancy Hicks (School of Arts and Sciences; Resident of
Jersey City, NJ)
Nancy is an enthusiastic and veteran volunteer. As Vice-President
of the Black Student Union and Secretary of the Social Work Club, Nancy
is a key contributor to the success of many programs at both
organizations. She participates in Midnight Runs sponsored by
Campus Ministry and volunteers at Hale House in New York City.
Nancy also volunteers at the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle and
March of Dimes fund-raising events.
Thomas Smythe (School of New Resources graduate;
currently enrolled in Graduate School; Resident of New Rochelle, NY)
Since 2001, Thomas has helped minister to the homeless with the Gospel
Tabernacle Church by helping prepare and serve breakfast twice a month
to more than seventy homeless individuals. He also volunteers at
St. Vincent's Hospital where he assists mentally disabled adults with
social skills, work adjustment, and wellness programs. The hospital
administration, the staff and patients publicly acknowledged Thomas’
contributions to the program and on them individually.
Rebecca Greene (School of New Resources; Resident of St.
Albans, NY)
Rebecca is a senior at the John Cardinal O''Connor Campus in the
South
Bronx, and plans to become a counselor. She is a member
of From The Pit to Glory Ministry in Jamaica, NY, where she
volunteers
10 hours a week working in community outreach. Rebecca also volunteers
for Rotary International, an organization that conducts job fairs,
health/wellness programs, feeds the homeless at Thanksgiving, and
provides services for the needs of the local community youth.

which admit women and men: the School of New Resources (for adult
learners),
