Dr. Dory Ferraro
Dr. Dory Roedel Ferraro received her A.A.S. in Nursing and began her career as a critical care nurse. She earned a Masters of Science in Nursing at State University of New York at Stony Brook and national certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner. She began her career as a nurse practitioner in a private surgical practice and was one of the first NPs to be appointed to the medical staff at a number of Long Island hospitals, where she provided both inpatient and outpatient care. Until recently, she was clinical director of bariatric services at Columbia University Medical Center at Lawrence Hospital and later at Stamford Hospital. She recently earned her doctorate in nursing practice at Columbia University. She maintains a private N.P. practice specializing in wellness and weight management, which she founded in 2001.
She is a nationally recognized expert in the field of bariatric medicine and surgery, and has been instrumental in the development of bariatric nursing practice. Her research experience includes a position as coordinator for the LAP-BAND® clinical trials in the United States and work in the area of telemedicine and telenutrition. She has been published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and authored a chapter titled “Obesity and Bariatric Surgery Care” in The Nurse Practitioner’s Guide to Nutrition. She is an active member, course director, and chair of the Integrated Health Abstract Committee of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
Dr. Ferraro has held positions as clinical assistant professor at SUNY Stony Brook and Columbia University, and as visiting professor of nursing at Chamberlain College. She is currently an adjunct professor at Columbia University in the Doctorate of Nursing Practice program.
