Focus The Nation is the culmination of several student initiatives at The College of New Rochelle during the fall semester that focus on protecting the environment and raising awareness of the issues surrounding the subject of climate change.


FOCUS THE NATION

The College of New Rochelle will be one of only two colleges in Westchester to participate in Focus The Nation (FTN), an unprecedented national simultaneous educational symposia on global warming solutions for America. FTN’s goal is to create a dialogue and promote civic engagement with local, state and federal political leaders nationwide on climate change. As the largest teach-in in U.S. history, Focus The Nation is preparing hundreds of thousands of students to become leaders in the largest civilizational challenge any generation has faced.

POLAR BEAR PLUNGE
December 8, 2007
Hudson Park, New Rochelle, NY
In December, over 100 members of the College Community were on hand to support student, faculty and staff who participated in the “Keep Winter Cold! Fight Global Warming! National Polar Bear Plunge” by jumping into the icy waters of the Long Island Sound to draw attention to the issue of climate change.

Charles David Keeling (1928-2005) began measuring atmospheric carbon dioxide atop the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii in 1957.  His measurements are the single most important data that awakened mankind to potential global-scale environmental effects of our activities.

Dr. Anne McKernan, Associate Professor of History in the School of Arts & Sciences, and undergraduate students attended a presentation by Dr.Wangari Muta Maathai, the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner and is a celebrated political activist, feminist, and environmentalist.  m o r e


GREEN TORCH RELAY
October 26, 2007
Bike Relay to Albany, NY
In October CNR students were part of a three-college “Green Torch” relay team that biked to Albany to deliver an invitation to New York’s elected leaders to participate in discussions on global warming solutions at their colleges during the January FTN event. CNR’s invitation included over 500 signatures.
