RESEARCH GUIDE:  WOMEN'S ISSUES

General Information:

The topic of women’s issues is wide ranging and thus intersects with all aspects of life. Your interest may be in any of the areas: biography, diseases, education, employment, health and hygiene, history, legal status, mental health, nutrition, psychology, public opinion, religious life, rights, social condition, or suffrage. Some topics may be a combination of  ‘women’ linked to other terms such ‘women and journalism’ , ‘women and the military’, ‘women dentists’ , ‘women gardeners’ or ‘women in television’.

This guide is designed to help you learn more about issues concerning women in general and to get you started on your research in the topic.  There are many resources available on this subject.  Some are listed below.  Keep in mind that you may narrow your search in this field by including other related terms in  your research.

Everything you need to begin your research is found at our homepage - go to:  Library Home Page

LISTSERVs:

A LISTSERV® is a commercial mailing list management system that allows you to subscribe to or create, manage, and control an electronic mailing list. Mailing Lists are email-based discussion groups. Each member that is subscribed to a particular mailing list receives a copy of every message sent to that list via E-mail.

LISTSERVs can be a valuable resource for a researcher as long as one keeps in mind that messages are not necessarily posted by experts in the field.  Information obtained from LISTERVs should be verified whenever possible.  If you need help subscribing, searching archives, or posting a question on a LISTSERV, please see a Reference Librarian.  Some examples are:

Breast Cancer Discussion List

Ovarian Cancer Discussion List

Chicago Women in Technology Discussion List

Women Leaders Online Discussion List

Internet Search Engines

The Internet offers a great variety of information to researchers, however one must be extremely careful to evaluate every source of information.  (For a complete guide on how to evaluate internet sources, go to: Evaluating web sites The most common way to search the internet is by using a search engine.  Some common search engines to use are:

            Google

            Vivissimo

            Alta Vista

            Teoma

            Yahoo

            Dogpile

            A9

For more accurate results, visit each site’s search tips or help screens to make sure you are using the most effective searching techniques.  To minimize results that are not relevant, avoid typing in free text in the search box.  Rather, use each search engine’s advanced search screens to maximize the relevancy of your results.
