SOW 225 Dynamics/ Family Violence
This course explores issues of violence and abuse as they relate to intimate
relationships. Causes, consequences, and resources will be discussed.

SOW 289 ST: Helping Children Learn
This elective course is intended to enable students to become familiar
with the values and skills that are appropriate for counseling practice
within the context of public schools. In the school setting, the worker
is generally a member of a pupil personnel support team. The function
of school support services is to facilitate students’ maximum use
of educational opportunities. Increasingly, students come into the school
setting displaying difficulties in the learning situation because of family
and or personal issues. This course will focus on some of the strategies
that can help ease these difficulties. There also will be discussion of
evaluative tools that can help clarify the problems children are having
in the classroom, as well as discussion of ways to work with parents and
students in order to help students function more effectively. Class sessions
will include: lecture, case presentations, discussion, guest speaker,
student presentations and video material.

SOW 289 ST: Case Studies of Immigrant Families
Using a case study format, this course will focus on recent Latino immigrant
families. It will explore issues in the emigration process as well as
the challenges family members face as they adjust to life in the United
States. Resources and self-help programs that facilitate this transition
process will be discussed. Roles for social workers, psychologists, educators,
and other helping professionals will be identified.

SOW 289 ST: Human Services and the Family Court System
This course will provide an overview of the Family Court System, including
how a case progresses through the system, the role of a human service
worker, and appropriate resources and referrals. The content will be both
didactic and experiential using case examples, guest speakers, and videos.

SOW 289 ST: Camp Viva
This community experience is at Camp Viva, a unique program for children
and families infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. Students in this course
will serve as volunteer counselors in a one-week overnight summer camp
program under the supervision of trained personnel from Family Service
of Westchester. A faculty mentor will meet with students daily to assist
in their learning. Contact Dr. Judith Gordon, Chair of the Social Work
Department to obtain an application. Only students whose applications
have been approved may register for this course.

Camp dates: August 24 through 30, 2003
Required Training dates: August 12, 6:00-9:00 p.m., and August 16, 9:00-3:00
p.m.
SOW 289 Sexual Identity and Gender Expression
This course will provide an overview of what it means to be gay, lesbian,
or bisexual and will explore the differences between sexual orientation
and gender identity expression. There will be a discussion of issues that
confront people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender (glbt)
including the psychological impact of homophobia; gender-specific issues;
and developmental issues across the life span of glbt people. Finally,
there will be a discussion of how human service professionals can provide
competent care to glbt clients and information about local resources will
be given.
