ADMISSION

Prospective Freshmen
High School students interested in pursing a major in social work should apply to the School of Arts and Sciences and indicate their interest in social work on the application for admission. For detailed information about the admission process or to download an application go to the admission page .

Transfer and Continuing Students
Students who are interested in the social work major, both those already matriculated and those who are transferring, should contact the Social Work Department. One of the faculty will answer the student's questions, explain the program, and review the student's academic record. To be admitted, students should have an overall grade point average of 2.0 or better. Prospective social work majors must complete an application during the first semester of their junior year to be considered for formal admission to the Social Work Program. The faculty of the Social Work Program review each application and notify applicants in writing about final admission decisions.

Students who have taken social work courses at other schools before transferring to CNR must have them evaluated by their social work advisor. Ordinarily, only courses taken at a CSWE-accredited social work program are eligible for substitution for a social work course at CNR. Please note that in no case may social work credit be given for prior work or life experience (this is prohibited by CSWE accreditation standards). CNR's Social Work Department has a special transfer arrangement for students who have successfully completed the Human Services major at Westchester Community College (WCC) and several other area New York community colleges.

ADVISEMENT
Each social work major is assigned a social work faculty member as her advisor. Students generally meet with their advisors at least once a semester, but are encouraged to meet with them more often to review professional plans and progress.

POLICY ON NON-DISCRIMINATION
The Social Work Program at The College of New Rochelle conducts all aspects of its activities without discrimination. All those who participate in the Program are expected to treat each other with respect and without discrimination. Aside from being a policy in the Program, non-discrimination is a fundamental value of the profession of social work. In addition to providing planned, cumulative, sequential learning that integrates knowledge, values, and skills, the curriculum emphasizes human diversity as an important and critical dimension of social work practice. Students learn throughout the curriculum to understand, accept and appreciate, and use the special characteristics and skills of members of diverse groups. These include gender groups, different racial and ethnic groups, sexual orientation groups, socioeconomic groups, age groups, and people with differences in their physical and/or mental abilities.
