START-UP NY at The College of New Rochelle
In August 2014, The College of New Rochelle became the first private college in the Mid-Hudson Region to be designated as a START-UP NY location, and is now accepting applications from qualified high-technology businesses that align with the College's academic mission.
Through the program, The College of New Rochelle will seek to establish a partnership with high-tech businesses in fields such as biotechnology, information technology, re-manufacturing, advance materials, engineering, or electronic products. The College has designated 20,334 square feet in Maura Hall on its main campus in New Rochelle, for use by the selected business.
Described by Governor Andrew Cuomo as "the most ambitious economic development program in New York's recent history," START-UP NY provides major incentives for businesses to relocate, start up, or significantly expand in New York State through affiliations with public and private universities, colleges, and community colleges. Eligible businesses have the opportunity to operate state and local tax-free and their employees to pay no state or local personal income taxes for up to ten years, while partnering with higher education institutions.
To be eligible for the program, businesses must be a new company in New York State, a company from out-of-state that is relocating to New York, or an expansion of a company that already has employees in the state. Eligible businesses will undergo a competitive analysis to ensure there are no competitors in the area, followed by a validation process to ensure the company's business is aligned with the College's mission. A company might support this mission by allowing faculty to perform applied research, establishing internship and experiential learning opportunities for students, hiring directly from the campus population, or by undertaking numerous other mutually beneficial partnerships.
