Influenza A H1N1 and Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) Guidelines

The Health Services Office will track faculty, staff, and students from the College Community according to Public Health guidelines. The New York State Public Health Department has instructed that Public Health officials be notified of the incidence of Influenza A H1N1 and Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) among college members to evaluate circumstances at each school should further interventions be needed. Members of the College Community who begin to experience flu-like symptoms should contact their primary health care provider, stay home and engage in self isolation by avoiding contact with others as much as possible and complete the Online Reporting Form.

  • Sick people need to be separated from well individuals as soon as possible, including residence hall students. If an individual starts feeling sick, that person is encouraged to stay home until they are free of fever (less than 100 degrees) and associated symptoms for at least 24 hours. This fever is to be determined without the use of Tylenol, Advil, Motrin (Ibuprofen), and aspirin. People who become ill need to have limited contact with others and try to maintain a distance of at least six feet from other people.

  • Be watchful for emergency warning signs and seek emergency medical care if difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, chest pain, persistent vomiting with inability to keep fluids down, sudden dizziness, confusion, or other serious symptoms occur.

Individuals who begin to express flu-like symptoms need to participate in self-care practices and adhere to the following guidelines:

School of Arts and Sciences

  • If you are a commuter student and are experiencing symptoms, you are advised to stay home from school/clinical and contact Barbara Weed (bweed@cnr.edu) in the Dean’s Office.

  • If you are a resident student and are experiencing symptoms, you are to self isolate and contact Barbara Weed (bweed@cnr.edu) in the Dean's Office, your Residence Director, and the Health Services Office (healthcenter@cnr.edu). Resident students should return home if at all possible. If you must remain on campus, follow the directives of the Health Services and Residence Life staff. As always, if you are feeling ill and the Health Services Office is closed, contact your Residence Director on Duty/Resident Assistant on Duty for concerns or questions.

  • Resident students - if you are worried about a sick friend contact your Resident Assistant. As a member of a community, it’s important to look out for one another, and it’s even more important this year!

  • It is recommended that those who become ill stay home until 24 hours after being free of fever, without the use of fever-reducing medications, and associated symptom.

Once again, the Health Services Office staff is prepared to address the College’s concerns regarding flu-like symptoms and will make every attempt to be of assistance. If you have any questions or concerns about your personal health, please contact the Health Services Office at (914) 654-5311 or at healthcenter@cnr.edu.
