Literacy Education

The Literacy Education Program (Birth - Grade 12, Birth - Grade 6 and Grades 5 - 12) welcomes prospective students who hold a current teaching certification and wish to become Literacy Specialists. Our courses address issues of instruction and assessment for children and adolescents who are developing normally, at-risk, or in need of remediation. In class, we model best practices for our students and encourage them to collaborate with us in finding new applications that address the demands of New York State‚Äôs Common Core Curriculum.

Our students share a common set of goals:

  • Learn how to make instructional decisions based on a theoretical understanding of listening, speaking, reading, and writing as well as on formative data.
  • Acquire a repertoire of research based techniques in assessment and instruction.
  • Become reflective practitioners and life-long learners who will continue to grow professionally after they graduate.
  • Function effectively as outstanding classroom teachers and literacy specialists in their school district as well as in their community at large.
