Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Advanced Certificate

The College's multilingual/multicultural education program recognizes the diversity of liguistic backgrounds and cultures that characterize families and schools in the New York metropolitan area. For those who have provisional/initial or permanent/professional certification in a classroom area other than TESOL, including foreign language education, the Graduate School offers two advanced certificates: one for special education teachers and one for teachers in all other classroom areas, including foreign language education.

General Education Teachers

Required Courses - 18 Credits

  • MME 503 - Second Language Acquisition, 3 cr.
  • MME 511 - Structure of English, 3 cr.
  • MME 518 - Language Evaluation and Assessment, 3 cr.
  • MME 525 - Teaching Languages Across Content Areas (Math, Science, Social Studies, and Creative Arts), 3 cr.
  • MME 528 - Designing and Implementing Education for Diverse Populations, 3 cr.
  • MME 702 - Practicum in TESOL: Pre-K-12, 3 cr. (may be waived for candidates with 40 days' full-time experience as a bilingual, ESL, or foreign language teacher who qualify for exemption through submission and acceptance of an OT-11)

Special Education Teachers
