CNR Softball Team Selected to ECAC Post-Season Tournament
May 9, 2017
The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has selected The College of New Rochelle to the seven-team field in the 2017 ECAC Division III Softball Championship. The Blue Angels will travel to number two seed Richard Stockton University of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The championship first-round play will begin on Wednesday, May 10.
For the Blue Angels, this selection culminates a memorable season in which the team shattered the program winning record and winning percentage. The team finished the season at 16-10, quadrupling last year's win total. It was the program's first-ever winning season.
"This season, my first here at CNR, has been all about team building and focus," said Head Coach John Pryor. "The girls have quickly come together and fought hard through every series sharing values, positive attitudes, and confidence. All of that has helped to lay a new foundation that has allowed us to win, or at least learn from our losses."
This will be the first meeting between Stockton and CNR in softball. In fact, it will be the first time the Blue Angels have faced off with any member of the highly touted NJAC. This year's tournament features a field of seven teams in a double-elimination format.
CNR is led by freshman outfielder Victoria Holmes (Franklin, VA) who, after a stellar outing against York on Sunday, ranks in first place in the nation with a 0.605 batting average. She is also tops in on-base percentage. On the mound, CNR will rely on its duo of freshman Emily Perez (Queens, NY) who is 6-4 overall, and sophomore Victoria Rivera (Bronx, NY) who set a program best mark of 10-5.
“We are so excited to be participating in our first ECAC post-season softball tournament,” said John “Jay” Butler, director of athletics. “The coaches and players have much to celebrate since the program finished with a 0-24 record just two seasons ago. We are so proud of what they have accomplished this year and wish them success as they travel to play Stockton. Go Blue Angels!”
